Dulquer Salmaan, who has established a strong market among Telugu audiences, is back with I Am Game, a fantasy thriller that he has also co-produced along with Jom Varghese. Directed by Nahas Hidhayath, the film features Kalyani Lohar as the female lead, while Mysskin, Antony Varghese, Samyuktha Viswanathan and Vinay Forrt play key roles.

The film generated curiosity with its promotional material and finally hit the screens on Friday. Originally scheduled for release on Thursday, the film became available to Telugu audiences only from the first show after a delay reportedly caused by technical issues. The question now is whether this unusual fantasy thriller manages to live up to its promise.

Story

Dan (Dulquer Salmaan), the son of a millionaire, wants to prove that he can make money and establish himself without relying on his father. However, his business ventures soon land him deep in debt. Pressure from creditors keeps mounting, and at one point they even enter his office and assault him in front of everyone.

His father reprimands him, but Dan remains determined to make quick money. He eventually puts the money given to him by his mother into betting, only to lose it. Unable to accept the loss, Dan threatens the betting organisers and attempts to escape with his money. During the ensuing chaos, he meets with a serious accident and loses his right hand.

Fortunately, a donor is found and the hand is surgically transplanted onto Dan. During his physiotherapy, he meets Isha (Kalyani Lohar), and with her support, he gradually recovers.

But things take a bizarre turn after Dan begins experiencing strange behaviour from his transplanted hand. The hand appears to have a mind of its own and repeatedly refuses to obey him. Despite Dan's attempts to control it, the situation gets increasingly disturbing.

One day, when Dan goes betting, the hand attempts to kill a powerful businessman named David—without Dan's consent or involvement.

Who did the transplanted hand originally belong to? Why is it behaving this way? What is the story behind the hand's mysterious actions? And where does Dan's life ultimately lead? The answers form the rest of the story.

Analysis

The basic premise of I Am Game revolves around the spirit of a dead person possessing a gambler and seeking revenge. The idea of a spirit possessing a living person and taking revenge on those responsible for its death is certainly not new. Indian cinema, including Telugu films, has explored similar themes several times.

The first half takes its time establishing Dan's character, his gambling addiction and the problems caused by his mounting debts. The proceedings remain fairly ordinary until the mystery surrounding his transplanted hand begins to emerge.

The film becomes considerably more interesting when the doctor reveals that Dan's hand is behaving abnormally. The scenes in which the hand appears determined to take revenge create curiosity and lead to an engaging interval block. This successfully raises expectations for the second half.

The investigation into the identity of the person to whom the hand originally belonged is one of the more interesting portions of the film. However, the flashback involving cricketer Vicky (Antony Varghese) follows a largely familiar revenge-drama template. Although his backstory contains pain and tragedy, the emotional impact is not as strong as it could have been.

The climax, particularly the action involving the hand, provides some entertaining moments. However, considering that Dulquer Salmaan himself is at the centre of the film, the excessive action given to the hand sometimes feels unnecessary.

The biggest issue is the second half. While the first half manages to build intrigue effectively, the narrative loses some of its momentum later on. The extended runtime in the second half occasionally makes the film feel tedious.

Performances

Dulquer Salmaan is convincing as Dan and fits comfortably into the role. His interactions with the mysterious hand provide some of the film's lighter and more entertaining moments.

Kalyani Lohar is adequate as Isha and performs well within the scope of her character. Antony Varghese makes an impression as cricketer Vicky and delivers a sincere performance in the flashback portions.

Mysskin gets a routine role and does what is required of him. Samyuktha Viswanathan is decent in her part. Jayasudha, playing Mercy, brings her experience and trademark presence to the character.

Technical Aspects

Jakes Bejoy's music is one of the film's major strengths. The background score, in particular, elevates several scenes and adds to the thriller atmosphere.

The cinematography is impressive, and the film has a rich visual presentation throughout. The production values are evident on screen, particularly in the action and fantasy portions.

The core idea of a possessed hand seeking revenge is not entirely new, but the manner in which the concept has been presented gives the film some freshness. Ultimately, films based on familiar concepts succeed when the filmmaker finds a distinctive way of presenting them.

Director Nahas Hidhayath succeeds in making the first half engaging and intriguing, but the second half loses focus and slips into a more conventional revenge-drama mode.

Verdict

I Am Game has an interesting central idea and enough intriguing moments to keep audiences engaged, particularly during the first half. Dulquer Salmaan's performance, Jakes Bejoy's music, the cinematography and the mystery surrounding the transplanted hand work in its favour.

However, the routine revenge track, stretched second half and lack of emotional depth in the flashback portions prevent the film from reaching its full potential.

The film's limited promotion and delayed release in Telugu are also significant drawbacks. For a movie positioned as a pan-India project, such issues can seriously affect its reach. Even a film that generates positive word of mouth can struggle if audiences are unable to access it at the right time.

Overall, I Am Game is a watchable fantasy thriller with an intriguing premise, but it could have been much more effective with a tighter second half and stronger emotional writing.
