As part of the preparatory work, a team of officials from various departments recently conducted a survey at the Sri Sailam reservoir to assess the feasibility of the project.

Under the guidance of Project Engineer Amrith Kumar, the team, comprising officials from Tourism, Revenue, Forestry, Fisheries, and Water Resources, examined the upper stretch of the Krishna River. The team utilized specialized equipment to measure the river’s surface and found the location to be ideal for the development of an aero drone.

The establishment of the aero drone is expected to significantly enhance the accessibility of Sri Sailam, attracting both domestic and international tourists to the region. Officials emphasized that the development would pave the way for seaplane services, making it easier for travelers to reach the popular pilgrimage destination.

The government has ambitious plans to expand this initiative by setting up additional aero drones at strategic locations such as Nagarjunasagar and Prakasam Barrage. These efforts are aimed at boosting tourism and increasing state revenue. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister of Civil Aviation K. Ram Mohan Naidu have already expressed support for the project.

With the necessary groundwork in place, authorities are focused on expediting the establishment of the aero drone and the introduction of seaplane services, which are expected to become operational soon.

Chandrababu Naidu launched the first-ever seaplane service in Andhra Pradesh, offering tourists a unique aerial experience between Vijayawada and the sacred town of Sri Sailam. The service, which is set to begin full operations in March 2025, aims to significantly enhance tourism and provide an efficient alternative to road travel, reducing travel time and promoting regional connectivity.

Speaking at a press conference at the Patalaganga Ropeway entry point, Naidu described the seaplane service as a "remarkable innovation" in the state’s tourism history. "Today marks an important milestone as we introduce the seaplane service, which will offer travelers a fast and scenic journey from Vijayawada to Sri Sailam in just 40 minutes. This initiative will not only promote tourism but will also offer a unique way to experience the beauty of our state," said the Chief Minister.

Naidu highlighted the cultural and spiritual significance of Sri Sailam, home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, and a major pilgrimage site that attracts over 25,000 visitors daily. On weekends, the number swells to 70,000, with up to 150,000 people visiting during special religious occasions. He emphasized that the seaplane service would ease transportation challenges and provide a luxurious, efficient travel experience for pilgrims and tourists alike.

In addition to the seaplane service, the Chief Minister outlined plans for comprehensive development in the region, including a master plan for Sri Sailam to make it a world-class tourist and spiritual destination. "We are setting up a committee, including ministers, district officials, and other stakeholders, to prepare a master plan for the development of Sri Sailam, focusing on enhancing infrastructure, promoting eco-tourism, and preserving the region’s rich spiritual heritage," he said.

Naidu also emphasized the potential for adventure tourism in the area, with the surrounding forest and wildlife sanctuary offering opportunities for tiger safaris and nature walks. He noted that the government would develop additional infrastructure, such as ropeways, wildlife parks, and nature trails, to further enhance Sri Sailam's appeal to tourists seeking both spirituality and adventure.

The Chief Minister also spoke about future tourism development projects in other key locations, including the famous Gandikota, known as the "Grand Canyon of India." Plans are in place to develop this site into a major tourist attraction, with seaplane services also potentially extending to this region. "Gandikota, with its unique geological features and historical significance, will become an essential part of our tourism expansion. Along with Sri Sailam, we will ensure that Andhra Pradesh becomes one of the world’s premier travel destinations," he added.

Naidu reiterated the state’s commitment to making tourism an industrial hub by granting it industry status, which will unlock new avenues for investment, employment, and economic growth. "We are focused on creating a robust tourism ecosystem, with infrastructure that supports not only spiritual and cultural tourism but also adventure, eco-tourism, and educational tourism," said the Chief Minister.

The event was attended by various state ministers, district officials, and stakeholders, including Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu and other key leaders. As part of the ongoing tourism drive, the government is also working on initiatives to develop the state’s natural resources, including water bodies, forests, and eco-parks, to attract both domestic and international tourists.

With the introduction of the seaplane service, Andhra Pradesh aims to redefine its tourism sector and position itself as a top destination for travelers seeking unique and diverse experiences.
