NEW DELHI, April 18: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a sharp attack on the Opposition on Friday, expressing outrage over the defeat of key legislation related to women's reservations in the Lok Sabha and accusing the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and Samajwadi Party of collectively undermining women's empowerment.

Taking to the social media platform X, Mr. Shah said it was shameful that the Opposition parties were celebrating the defeat of a Bill that would have strengthened women's political representation. "This is not the first time Congress and its allies have done this. They have consistently adopted the same stance on critical issues concerning national development and women's empowerment," he said.

The Home Minister asserted that the Congress had no genuine interest in national development, women's rights, or empowerment, and that all the parties that had voted against the Bill had together betrayed Indian women who had been fighting for their rights for decades.

Mr. Shah warned that the Opposition would face a decisive political response from the women of India in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. "The women of this country will give a fitting answer to the parties that opposed the Women's Reservation Bill," he said, adding that no political force could afford to take women's aspirations lightly.

The 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill, which sought to fast-track the implementation of the one-third reservation for women in legislative bodies, was defeated in the Lok Sabha on Thursday after the ruling National Democratic Alliance failed to secure the two-thirds majority required for a constitutional amendment. Of the 528 members who participated in the division vote, 298 supported the Bill while 230 voted against it, leaving the government 54 votes short of the required 352.

Several parties are increasingly questioning how long they can continue under the leadership of a leader who, according to them, has failed to deliver electoral success. Among the key parties voicing their frustration are Shiv Sena (UBT), TMC, and Samajwadi Party, all of whom have hinted at the need for a leadership change. Particularly, Mamata Banerjee’s recent statement about her dissatisfaction with the coalition’s leadership and coordination has added fuel to the fire.

Mamata’s Challenge to Leadership

In a media interaction on Friday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her displeasure over the way the INDIA alliance is being run. "I formed the INDIA alliance. If given a chance, I would manage it smoothly. However, I do not want to leave Bengal. I can run the alliance from here," she remarked, signaling her desire to play a more prominent role.

Shiv Sena Backs Mamata

Shiv Sena (UBT) responded positively to Mamata’s assertion, with MP Priyanka Chaturvedi stating, “We understand Mamata’s opinion. We want her to be a main partner in the alliance. We will soon hold discussions with her in Kolkata.” This move signals a potential shift in the alliance’s power dynamics, with Mamata positioning herself as a key figure for the future.

CPI(M) leader D. Raja also emphasized that while the overarching goal remains "Save India, Remove BJP," the alliance must recognize that each state has its unique challenges.

BJP Seizes on Discontent

BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bandari seized the opportunity to highlight the internal strife within the alliance, stating that Mamata’s comments revealed the lack of confidence in Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. Samajwadi Party leader Udayveer Singh echoed support for Mamata’s remarks, adding to the growing chorus of dissatisfaction.

This decision followed a controversial post by Milind Narvekar, a close associate of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray, commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition. Narvekar’s post, which included an image of the mosque and comments by Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, led to tensions within the MVA. The move saw two SP MLAs take oath independently, marking a further fracture within the opposition alliance.

SP legislator Abu Azmi revealed that the party had chosen to distance itself from the alliance, citing the Shiv Sena (UBT)'s embrace of the Hindutva agenda as the primary reason for their withdrawal.

Azmi criticized the lack of coordination within the MVA, particularly regarding the allocation of seats in the Maharashtra Assembly elections and the subsequent election campaign. He pointed out that following their defeat in the Assembly elections, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had instructed party leaders and workers to aggressively pursue a Hindutva agenda during internal meetings. Azmi further highlighted the controversy surrounding a social media post by Shiv Sena (UBT) on December 6, which expressed support for the demolition of the Babri Masjid, an act that the SP deemed unacceptable.
