India Has Adequate Crude Oil Reserves, No Supply Disruptions Feared, Says Hardeep Singh Puri

NEW DELHI, May 12: Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday assured the nation that India faces no threat to its energy supply chain, stating that the country holds sufficient crude oil and liquefied natural gas reserves to meet domestic demand without disruption.

Speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Annual General Meeting and National Conference, the Minister said India currently maintains crude oil and LNG reserves adequate for 69 days, while LPG stocks are sufficient to last 45 days. "There are no dry-outs anywhere. The energy supply chain remains stable and we are managing the situation responsibly," he said.

Addressing concerns arising from the ongoing West Asia crisis, Puri said the government had proactively scaled up LPG production from 35,000-36,000 tonnes per day to 54,000 tonnes per day to ensure uninterrupted supply in line with rising domestic demand. "There are absolutely no issues with LPG supply," he emphasised.

The Minister also contextualised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent advisory to citizens, clarifying that the suggestions were made with a view to cushioning the Indian economy from potential financial pressures stemming from the West Asia conflict. Prime Minister Modi, addressing a Telangana BJP conclave in Hyderabad last Sunday, had made a series of recommendations to the public aimed at reducing the country's dependence on fuel imports and conserving foreign exchange reserves.

Among the measures suggested by the Prime Minister were reducing personal consumption of petrol and diesel, making greater use of metro rail services and carpooling in cities, increasing the adoption of electric vehicles, utilising railway services for parcel deliveries, and prioritising work-from-home arrangements where feasible. Modi had also urged citizens to defer gold purchases and non-essential foreign travel for a period of one year in order to protect the country's foreign exchange reserves.

Puri's remarks come at a time when global energy markets remain volatile due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The government's decision to significantly boost LPG output is seen as a pre-emptive measure to prevent any supply-side shocks from translating into domestic shortages.

Officials in the petroleum ministry have indicated that India has been diversifying its crude oil sourcing over the past several years, reducing its vulnerability to supply disruptions from any single region. The Minister's assurances are expected to allay public concerns about potential fuel shortages or price volatility in the near term.

Telangana to Unveil Green Energy-Focused Power Policy

Telangana, Hyderabad ( Journalist File ): Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka announced that the state government would soon unveil a new power policy, with a focus on solar, wind, and hydrogen energy production. Speaking at a press conference held at the Secretariat on Friday, he emphasized the state’s commitment to green energy and outlined plans to achieve 40,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2035.

Vikramarka criticized the opposition for maligning the government’s initiatives in the power sector. He highlighted that despite increased electricity demand, the government has maintained quality power supply and transparently shared details of power generation with the public. “We addressed the challenges in electricity supply upon coming to power and provided a comprehensive overview of power generation issues to the people,” he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister took a dig at the BRS government for its handling of the power sector, accusing it of reckless borrowing and poor governance. “During the Congress government, the debt stood at ₹52,000 crore. In ten years of BRS rule, this has escalated to ₹7 lakh crore, leaving the state in dire financial straits,” he alleged.

Focus on Welfare and Infrastructure

Bhatti Vikramarka reiterated his government’s commitment to welfare schemes, stating that ₹61,000 crore had been allocated for initiatives like Rythu Bharosa, loan waivers, Aarogyasri, and Cheyutha. He also mentioned funding for LPG subsidies, electricity subsidies, and farmer insurance schemes. “We are ensuring timely recruitment and improving infrastructure such as repairing damaged substations,” he said.

He assured citizens that the new power policy would address rising electricity demand and expand charging station infrastructure for electric vehicles. “We promise quality power supply that will set a benchmark for other states. Telangana’s model projects will serve as an inspiration across the country,” he said.

2047 Vision Document for Telangana’s Growth

Highlighting long-term goals, Vikramarka announced plans to release a ‘2047 Vision Document’ to guide the state’s development across sectors. “This will serve as a roadmap for Telangana’s progress, outlining how the state should evolve in the coming decades,” he said.

The Deputy CM also criticized the mismanagement of the Ramagundam Phase-2 power project under the previous government, which he claimed had burdened the DISCOMs with an additional ₹10,000 crore. “We are rectifying the flaws of past policies to steer the state toward sustainable growth,” he added.
