Mumbai ( Journalist File ) : Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Chief Sharad Pawar has raised concerns about the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the election process, expressing doubts over public trust in their reliability. Speaking at an anti-EVM rally in Markadwadi village, Sholapur district, on Sunday, Pawar stated that the public no longer has faith in EVMs, with many expressing skepticism regarding the results of recent elections in Maharashtra.

"While elections take place, with some winning and others losing, there is growing doubt among the public about the election process," Pawar said, referencing the recently concluded elections in Maharashtra. He noted that following the announcement of the election results, many voters have questioned the credibility of the EVMs.

Pawar highlighted that several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and various European nations, continue to rely on the traditional ballot system for elections, in contrast to India, which uses EVMs. "Why shouldn't India adopt the ballot system?" he questioned, emphasizing that the country should consider revisiting the traditional method of voting.

The NCP leader further stated that any complaints or concerns regarding the election process should be brought to his attention. "I will forward these grievances to the Election Commission and the Chief Minister of the state," Pawar assured.

This statement comes amid allegations of EVM misuse, with opposition lawmakers from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance refusing to take an oath on Saturday, accusing the machines of being tampered with during the elections.

( Editor's Desk, Journalist File )

Guntur, a key district in Andhra Pradesh, holds a unique position in the state’s political and administrative landscape, being home to the state secretariat, legislative assembly, and residences of top leaders. Every incident here reverberates across the state, influencing both political affairs and public security. The region, often faced with political unrest, protests and criminal activities has tested law enforcement regularly. However, since assuming office as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in July 2024, Satish Kumar has emerged as a strong protector of public safety, ushering in a transformative approach to policing.

Satish Kumar’s leadership has been marked by a firm belief that “Policing is about earning the public’s trust, and justice is about ensuring their security.” His unwavering stance against the illegal drug trade, ganja trafficking, and rowdyism has earned him significant public support. With a clear directive to eliminate such activities from Guntur, he emphasizes, “As long as I am the SP, ganja, drugs, and rowdyism will be wiped out.”

Since taking charge, his strategic efforts in controlling crime and restoring peace in the district have been widely appreciated. Under his guidance, Guntur has seen substantial improvements in law enforcement. Special focus has been placed on tackling organized crime, particularly rowdyism, where surveillance over the district’s top 150 rowdy sheeters and swift resolution of cases have been key. His use of legal tools such as the Preventive Detention Act (PD Act) and city bans on certain individuals has further curbed criminal activities in the region.

A significant innovation under Satish Kumar’s tenure has been the “Nakabandi” initiative—an extensive program of surprise night checks. These inspections, combined with a review of police station activities, have played a crucial role in reducing criminal activities. Additionally, his proactive approach in strengthening women's safety in the district has been one of the most commendable aspects of his tenure. Through the "Mahila...Mee Kosam" (For Women...Your Safety) initiative, he has provided around-the-clock protection for women, including the launch of a dedicated helpline (97 4641 4641), which has made a tangible impact in combating crimes like eve-teasing and ragging.

Satish Kumar has also demonstrated significant leadership in the realm of cybercrimes, working diligently to control the spread of misinformation and regulate harmful social media activities. His efforts have extended to community education on the dangers of drugs and alcohol, promoting awareness to protect the public from these societal threats.

Through his outreach programs, such as “Vardhi,” Satish Kumar has bridged the gap between police and rural communities, helping citizens understand their legal rights while offering support for crime prevention. These community-friendly initiatives have gained considerable traction, ensuring that police remain approachable and trusted by people across Guntur.

A highlight of his approach is his focus on scientific investigation and swift legal proceedings in key cases, including those related to child protection (POCSO) and murders. His prompt response to missing persons cases, particularly involving women and children, has ensured timely justice and support for the victim's families.

SP Satish Kumar’s leadership has led to a significant shift in the way policing is perceived in Guntur. His efforts to restore law and order, coupled with his focus on enhancing police-public relations, have earned him accolades from all corners. Under his leadership, the Guntur police have set a high standard for policing across Andhra Pradesh, demonstrating that “trust in the public is the cornerstone of lasting peace and security.” His leadership style, defined by his belief that “a winning horse knows no competition,” has inspired a model of policing that other districts in the state are now looking to replicate.
