Contextualising the West Bengal result within a broader historical frame, Mr. Madhav said the victory was made possible by the sacrifices of Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, and that winning in the land of luminaries such as Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Swami Vivekananda, and Subhas Chandra Bose lent the achievement special significance.

He was sharply critical of the preceding years of Communist and Trinamool Congress rule in the State, alleging that both had presided over a rise in lawlessness. He further alleged that illegal immigrants from Bangladesh had been encouraged and cultivated as a vote bank by the ruling dispensation. Madhav leading the procession from the Sujana Chowdary office at Bhavani Puram. Party leaders and workers turned out in large numbers for the celebratory event.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Madhav said the results reflected the trust that voters across the three States had reposed in the BJP. He singled out West Bengal as particularly significant, asserting that the people of the State had decisively ended the Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee. The Bengal verdict, he said, had been received with jubilation across the country.

A journey from one seat to a historic majority

Recalling the party's ideological lineage, Mr. Madhav noted that the Jana Sangh had begun its journey in West Bengal — the birthplace of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee — with just a single seat, and that the BJP's landmark victory in the State today represented a remarkable political transformation. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he added, NDA governments were now in power in nearly 20 States, which he described as a testament to the country's development trajectory.

Wins across States

Mr. Madhav also highlighted the party's strong performance in Assam under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, as well as its gains in Puducherry. He pointed to the party's showing in constituencies with a Muslim population of around 60 per cent — where the BJP had won 40 of 63 seats — as evidence that the notion of minorities being averse to the party was a misconception. He also said the BJP welcomed the victory of actor-politician Vijay in Tamil Nadu.

The State president attributed the electoral successes to the organisational efforts of senior leaders such as Amit Shah and Sunil Bansal, as well as the sacrifices of party workers at the grassroots level.

Referring to the ideological roots of the party, Mr. Madhav said West Bengal shared a historical connection with BJP’s founding ideologue Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The party’s success in his home State had enthused cadres across the country, he added.

Satyakumar Yadav on Monday announced that the Centre is set to introduce the 'Nari Shakti Vandanam' legislation aimed at ensuring adequate representation for women in legislative bodies, with parliamentary debate on the Bill scheduled for the 17th and 18th of this month.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP district office, presided over by district president M.M.N. Parashurama Raju, the Minister underscored the stark disparity between women's share of the population and their presence in elected bodies. "Women constitute more than half the country's population, yet their representation in legislatures stands at a mere 13 per cent," he said.

Mr. Satyakumar pointed to the success of the 33 per cent reservation for women in local bodies as evidence of their capability and readiness for a larger political role. He also cited schemes such as Jan Dhan accounts, Startup India, and Stand Up India as instruments through which women had achieved greater economic self-reliance in recent years.

Reaffirming the NDA coalition's commitment to substantive rather than rhetorical women's empowerment, the Minister stated that the alliance had set itself the goal of implementing the women's reservation framework from the next elections onward.

Opposition in the crosshairs

Turning to political matters, Mr. Satyakumar trained his criticism on the opposition, expressing surprise that the Congress party, which he said had failed to cross even the 100-seat mark, continued to level charges against the government. He also took strong exception to remarks by YSRCP leaders regarding investments by global firms such as Google and ArcelorMittal in the State, calling their statements unwarranted.

On the Bhogapuram project, the Minister said it was untenable for those who had neglected the initiative for five years to now claim ownership of it.

Commenting on the broader national political landscape, Mr. Satyakumar asserted that a change in governance was needed in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, and added that senior coalition leaders would campaign in areas with a significant Telugu-speaking population wherever elections are under way.

The press conference was attended by BJP Legislature Party leader P. Vishnu Kumar Raju, TDP district president Ch. The absence of any punitive action against those responsible, he said, had fuelled a growing sense of insecurity among the coastal communities.

Madhav outlined a series of measures he said were urgently needed to address the situation. These included the modernisation and strengthening of marine police stations, the induction of local fishermen as Home Guards, and enhanced surveillance in coordination with the Coast Guard. He also called for the revival of the Coastal Security Technical System that had been in place in 2010, and suggested that retired Navy personnel and local fishermen be redeployed under the framework to bolster coastal vigilance.

Urging the State government to take firm action against those who enter Andhra Pradesh's waters illegally and resort to intimidation, Madhav also called for coordination with the Tamil Nadu government to address the issue at an inter-State level. He appealed to the Andhra Pradesh government to find a permanent solution to a problem that had persisted for several years and continued to undermine the livelihoods and safety of coastal communities.

Sports Desk (Journalist File): Dommaraju Gukesh has made history by becoming the youngest-ever FIDE World Chess Champion at the age of 18. Gukesh clinched the coveted title after defeating reigning champion Ding Liren of China in the final match of the championship. In the decisive 14th round played on Thursday, Gukesh scored 7.5 points, edging past Ding’s 6.5 points to secure the victory.

This remarkable feat makes Gukesh only the second Indian to win the FIDE World Chess Championship, following Viswanathan Anand’s triumph in 2012. The tournament, held in Singapore, witnessed a fiercely contested battle between Gukesh and Ding Liren, culminating in a thrilling finale.

The penultimate 13th round on Wednesday saw a nail-biting encounter between the two grandmasters. The match, lasting nearly five hours, ended in a draw, with both players locked at 6.5 points after 68 moves. The championship was thus decided in the final classical game on Thursday, where Gukesh emerged victorious with a full-point lead.

Although Gukesh grew up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, his roots trace back to East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. His father, Dr. Rajinikanth, is a surgeon. Gukesh developed a keen interest in chess at the tender age of seven and has since amassed numerous accolades. He was recently recognized as the Asian Chess Federation’s Player of the Year 2023. At 18, he has now scaled the pinnacle of chess, solidifying his place among the game’s greats.

The tenure of the current Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, Shaktikanta Das, is set to conclude on December 10. Das, who took office as the 25th RBI Governor in December 2018, has served more than the usual five-year term, surpassing the tenure of his predecessor, Urjit Patel. He was reappointed for a second term in 2021. A retired IAS officer from Tamil Nadu’s 1980 batch, Das has held various key positions in the Indian government, including Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Secretary in the Revenue Department. He also served as the Chief Secretary for the Tamil Nadu government and worked in several capacities at the World Bank and ADB.

Das, a graduate and post-graduate in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, recently made headlines for being named as one of the Top Central Bankers globally for 2024 by Global Finance. His leadership, particularly during the economic challenges posed by inflation and growth slowdown, has garnered considerable acclaim.

Sanjay Malhotra, a 1990 batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, has been appointed as the new RBI Governor. Currently serving as the Secretary of the Department of Revenue, Malhotra will take over from Das on December 11. The Cabinet Appointment Committee has approved his appointment, which will be effective for a three-year term.

Malhotra brings over 33 years of experience in critical areas such as finance, taxation, power, information technology, and mining. His appointment comes at a pivotal time, with the economy facing challenges in controlling inflation and boosting economic growth.
