The Andhra Pradesh government has launched an elaborate programme titled 'Yogaandhra-2026' to mark International Yoga Day on June 21, setting a target of engaging one crore citizens across the state in yoga activities, from village level to the state capital.

The flagship event will be held in Amaravati, where 25,000 participants are expected to gather for a state-level yoga session. In the fortnight leading up to the day, awareness drives, walkathons, social media campaigns, and demonstration events will be conducted under the Yogaandhra banner from June 7 to June 20.

District-wise thematic approach

In what officials describe as a distinctive feature of this year's observance, each of the state's 28 districts has been assigned a specific community or occupational group as its theme. NTR district will conduct sessions with police personnel, while East Godavari will involve prison inmates. Visakhapatnam's programme is themed around serving and retired defence personnel, and Alluri Sitarama Raju district will focus on tribal communities.

Other notable pairings include Kurnool with sanitation workers, Tirupati with celebrities, Anantapur with persons with disabilities, and YSR Kadapa with multi-generational family participation. Guntur district's sessions will centre on engineering students, while Prakasam will engage DWACRA women's groups. Each district headquarters is required to ensure a minimum of 1,000 participants.

Infrastructure and digital outreach

Competitions in yoga will be held at village, mandal, district, and state levels, with participation open to students, athletes, women's self-help groups, health workers, and industrial labourers, among others. Venues including schools, parks, community halls, stadiums, and gram sachivalayams will be equipped with drinking water, seating, and temporary shelters.

Oversight of the programme at the district level has been entrusted to the respective Collectors. The Tourism Department has been directed to organise special yoga demonstrations at more than 100 tourist sites across the state.

To streamline participation, the government plans to develop a dedicated web portal and an AI-based registration and verification application. Digital certificates will be issued to all participants upon completion.

Guntur, April 17: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Guntur district unit, is set to organise a district-level awareness conclave on the autonomy of Hindu temples, with organisers stating that the event will be held on Sunday, April 19, at 4.30 p.m. at the Tyagaraja Cultural Association Hall, 2nd Line, Lakshmipuram.

Organisers pointed out that decades after Independence, Hindu temples continue to function without full administrative autonomy, and that government interference in their management runs contrary to Articles 12, 25, and 26 of the Constitution. They expressed concern over a range of issues, including increasing political interference in temple administration, the induction of non-Hindus into trust boards and temple employment, the alleged misappropriation of temple revenues, and encroachment upon temple lands.

The VHP has launched a nationwide movement with the objective of freeing temples from government control and vesting them with autonomous status, organisers said. As part of this campaign, a large public meeting was earlier convened in Vijayawada. Following an extensive study of temple conditions across several states and a series of consultations with legal and administrative experts, the organisation has prepared a draft model legislation, a copy of which has also been submitted to the State government, they added.

District-wise awareness conclaves are currently being conducted across the State to consolidate public opinion on the issue. Organisers urged prominent citizens, community leaders, and devotees from across the district to participate in the event and offer their suggestions. They also extended an appeal to all to join what they described as a people's movement for the restoration of Hindu temple autonomy.

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday served notice on the state government to take immediate action to protect Hindu temple lands from encroachment, restore dilapidated shrines, and ensure that temple revenues are channelled back into the institutions they belong to. State BJP president PVN Madhav, who spearheaded the effort, said petitions to this effect were submitted at collectorate offices across the state.

The demand follows extensive ground-level outreach conducted under the party's 'Janata Varadhi' programme, during which Madhav and party workers toured villages and towns and found widespread disquiet among temple trustees and devotees over the fate of religious endowments. "Hindu temples are not merely places of worship. They are living symbols of our civilisation and the faith of crores of people," he said.

Madhav reserved sharp words for the violence that accompanied recent incidents in Akividu, calling the attacks unacceptable and pressing the government to identify and act firmly against those responsible for instigating the trouble.

On the question of temple lands, he cited figures suggesting that of roughly 4.7 lakh acres of endowment lands across the state, as many as 1.5 lakh acres have been encroached upon. He flagged what he described as a disturbing pattern — lands being absorbed into private survey numbers, ostensibly in the name of development, and attempts to transfer urban temple properties to private individuals through long-term lease arrangements. He called on the government to step back from any plan to regularise such encroachments, warning that it would amount to legitimising what was essentially a transfer of religious assets.

The BJP leader pressed for a full-scale survey of all temple lands, strict action against those found to be in unlawful possession, and the restitution of encroached properties to the temples concerned. He also urged that funds generated by temples be ring-fenced for their own upkeep, festival expenses, and the restoration of structures that have fallen into disrepair.

Concluding his remarks, Madhav said the petition drive represented far more than a routine memorandum. "This is the voice of Hindu society," he said, adding that the party would hold the government accountable if its demands were not addressed.
