AMARAVATI, September 4: National-level experts have praised the innovative and comprehensive measures being implemented by the Andhra Pradesh Government to control and eliminate malaria in the State.

The expert teams appreciated the State’s efforts in disease surveillance, early detection and management of cases, expansion of healthcare services in tribal areas, community participation and coordination between the government and private healthcare sectors.

The experts specifically noted the use of the Chief Minister’s Dashboard, AWARE system, drone technology, feeder ambulances, ‘Friday–Dry Day’ campaign, Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) and distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) as notable initiatives.

Malaria programmes reviewed in four States

As part of preparations for the National Strategic Plan for 2027–2032, national-level expert teams are reviewing malaria control programmes in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Odisha.

The expert teams visited Andhra Pradesh from September 1 to Friday and conducted field-level assessments in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, which has a relatively high malaria burden, and Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district, where the incidence is comparatively low.

During the visit, the teams examined healthcare services available at health centres, case detection and treatment mechanisms and measures being taken to prevent and control malaria.

Review meeting with Health Commissioner

Following the four-day field visit, the expert teams held a review meeting with Health and Family Welfare Commissioner Chakradhar Babu and other officials at the APICC office in Mangalagiri on Friday night. Several experts also participated virtually.

Prof. Dr Kamini Mendis, Dr Nirmal Jo, Dr Lokesh Kori, Dr Arya Rahul, Dr P.K. Sen, Dr Pranab J. Bhuyan and Dr Badri Thapa were among those who participated in the discussions.

The experts appreciated the use of the Chief Minister’s Dashboard for monitoring disease surveillance and the AWARE system for assessing the status of malaria cases and tracking their management.

They noted that Andhra Pradesh was making effective use of technology in public health programmes to strengthen disease surveillance and control measures.

Drone services in tribal areas

The expert teams examined the use of drone-based technology to support diagnosis and treatment in remote and difficult-to-reach tribal areas.

The deployment of feeder ambulances to transport patients from remote locations to nearby hospitals was also appreciated. The experts observed that such measures could help bridge gaps in access to healthcare services in geographically difficult areas.

‘Friday–Dry Day’ initiative appreciated

The teams also appreciated the ‘Friday–Dry Day’ initiative, under which potential mosquito-breeding sites are identified and eliminated while awareness is created among the public about malaria, dengue and other vector-borne diseases.

The distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) in malaria-prone areas and efforts to educate communities on their proper use were also highlighted by the experts.

Experts suggest further strengthening of programme

The expert teams observed that the comprehensive approach adopted by Andhra Pradesh was contributing to improved malaria control outcomes.

They recommended further strengthening early diagnosis, timely treatment, disease surveillance and mosquito-control measures. They also called for greater community participation and improved coordination among different government departments.

The experts stressed the need to continue focusing on extending healthcare services to remote areas and ensuring early detection and timely treatment of malaria cases. 

Punya Salila Srivastava reviews AP's health schemes at Mangalagiri, flags rising burden of non-communicable diseases and urges vigilance on water quality, waste disposal and cancer care

AMARAVATI: Union Health and Family Welfare Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava on Thursday called upon State governments to partner actively in the Central government's efforts to eliminate HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, measles, and rubella from the country by 2030, saying the targets were ambitious but achievable with coordinated action at every level of administration.

Ms. Srivastava, who was on a visit to Andhra Pradesh, met senior health officials at the headquarters of the State's Medical, Health and Family Welfare Department in Mangalagiri and reviewed the implementation of various health schemes currently under way in the State.

NCDs overtaking communicable diseases

Addressing officials, Ms. Srivastava expressed concern that non-communicable diseases were increasingly outpacing communicable diseases as a public health burden across the country. She said continuous surveillance was essential to keep this trend in check and called for early detection mechanisms to be put in place so that preventive action could be taken before outbreaks took hold.

She attributed the rise in disease incidence partly to climate change and the declining practice of personal hygiene. On vector-borne diseases such as malaria, she said inadequate disposal of waste was a significant contributing factor, and stressed the need for stricter waste management protocols at the local level.

Water quality and blood banks

Ms. Srivastava underlined the importance of continuous water quality testing as a safeguard against cholera, diarrhoea, and other waterborne illnesses. She also directed that departmental inspections of blood banks be conducted regularly to ensure standards were maintained, and called for greater focus on expanding cancer care services and trauma care infrastructure across the State.

Medical education and innovation

The Secretary urged State officials to make full use of the Central government's offer to increase seats in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programmes, saying the opportunity should not be allowed to lapse.

Earlier in the meeting, State Health Secretary Saurabh Gaur briefed Ms. Srivastava on the implementation of the Sanjeevani health scheme, the 108 and 104 emergency services, and innovations introduced under the Medic Challenge initiative. Ms. Srivastava intervened to note that innovations of this kind should obtain clearance from the Indian Council of Medical Research so that they could be scaled up or replicated with appropriate regulatory backing in the future.

Ms. Srivastava expressed satisfaction with the overall progress of health department schemes in Andhra Pradesh, even as she flagged areas requiring continued attention and course correction.

Deputy Chief Minister reviews district development with Collector and SP, directs officials to eliminate potholed roads, ensure drinking water supply, and complete Green Wall project before monsoon

KAKINADA: Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Thursday announced that he would visit Kakinada district once every two months, saying he intended to engage directly with residents of both the Kakinada and Pithapuram constituencies to hear their grievances at first hand and ensure their prompt resolution.

Chairing a review meeting at his camp office in Mangalagiri with Kakinada District Collector M.N. Harendraprasad and Superintendent of Police Bindhu Madhav, Mr. Kalyan issued a series of directives covering infrastructure, public health, sanitation, youth welfare, and law enforcement.

Roads and water supply

Mr. Kalyan directed the Collector to ensure that not a single potholed road remained anywhere in the district. He said roads that had deteriorated beyond repair should be rebuilt entirely, while minor potholes were to be patched without delay. He also called for a comprehensive plan to develop all internal roads across the district, with particular attention to village-level connectivity.

On drinking water, the Deputy Chief Minister stressed that every household must receive potable water in line with the targets set under the Jal Jeevan Mission, and that disruptions to supply under no circumstances should be allowed to occur.

Health, sanitation, and youth

Mr. Kalyan asked officials to strengthen oversight of government hospitals, conduct periodic reviews of facilities, and prioritise sanitation management across the district. He directed that village-level parks be developed and that schools and hostels be visited regularly to assess and address the needs of students.

The Deputy Chief Minister also called for structured programmes to train youth in sports, arts, and vocational skills, saying that identifying and nurturing talent at the grassroots would multiply the productive capacity of young people in the district. He asked that libraries be strengthened and that mechanisms be put in place to recognise and encourage innovation among youth.

Green Wall and environment

Mr. Kalyan instructed forest officials to ensure that the Great Green Wall project — a coastal plantation drive along Kakinada district's shoreline — was completed before the onset of the monsoon. He asked that a tree-planting programme be launched as part of broader environmental conservation efforts in the district.

Crackdown on ration mafia

Addressing the SP, Mr. Kalyan called for firm action against the illegal diversion of PDS rice, saying that those involved in the ration mafia must be dealt with decisively. He directed the police to put in place stringent measures to prevent the illicit transportation of subsidised grain meant for the poor.

Mr. Kalyan holds the Pithapuram assembly constituency and has represented it since the 2024 general elections. Thursday's review is the latest in a series of administrative engagements he has undertaken at the district level since assuming office as Deputy Chief Minister.

Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has taken steps to strengthen the supply of medicines and surgical items to the State's 104 Mobile Medical Units (MMUs), which serve patients in remote villages, by making it mandatory to record all stock details on the e-Aushadhi portal. A two-day State-level training programme was conducted in this regard, in pursuance of directions issued by Health Secretary Saurabh Gaur.

Two-Day Training at Mangalagiri

The training programme, held at the APIIC Towers in Mangalagiri, was organised by the Information Technology wing of the Andhra Pradesh Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APMSIDC) under the supervision of the Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva Trust. A total of 55 district and regional managers, operations executives, and other personnel attached to the 104 MMU division received State-level training during the programme.

Master Trainers to Cascade Learning to Districts

C-DAC Senior Project Engineer Pasupuleti Ashwini said in a statement that master trainers who have undergone State-level training would in turn impart training to data entry operators attached to the 104 mobile medical units at the district level, ensuring uniform implementation of the new system across the State.

Real-Time Stock Monitoring Now Possible

Ashwini noted that the availability of stock details online would enable authorities to monitor the supply of medicines and surgical items at any point in time, facilitating timely replenishment based on actual requirements. She added that online stock registration had already been in place at Health and Wellness Centres for over a year, and that the training programme had been organised to extend the same system to the 104 MMUs in accordance with Health Secretary Gaur's directives.

Plugging Gaps in Village Healthcare Delivery

The move is expected to bring greater accountability and efficiency to the last-mile delivery of medicines to patients in villages, where the 104 mobile units serve as a critical healthcare lifeline. By integrating the MMUs into the e-Aushadhi framework, the government aims to ensure that stock shortfalls are identified and addressed promptly, reducing disruptions to rural healthcare services.
