Air Quality in Hyderabad Deteriorates Sharply Following Diwali Celebrations

Hyderabad (Journalist File ) : Air pollution in Hyderabad has escalated to alarming levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching a concerning 171, attributed largely to the heavy bursting of firecrackers during Diwali. According to the Telangana State Pollution Control Board, air pollution in the city has increased by 10% compared to the previous year. Areas such as Kapra, Bollaram, Patancheru, Somajiguda, and Sanathnagar have recorded particularly high pollution levels, with nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide reaching hazardous concentrations.

A report by The Lancet Planetary Health indicates that over the past decade, air pollution in Hyderabad has contributed to over 6,000 deaths. In 2023 alone, the city saw 1,597 deaths related to air pollution. Medical experts warn that prolonged exposure to poor air quality poses severe health risks, particularly for those with pre-existing conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cardiovascular issues. Short-term effects of exposure to the current pollution levels include respiratory issues, chest tightness, and aggravated asthma symptoms. Prolonged exposure, they caution, could lead to lung cancer and an increased risk of heart attacks.

Experts attribute the worsening air quality to rapid urban development, rising vehicular emissions, and expanding industrial activities. According to Pollution Control Board data, several city areas have crossed safe AQI levels, with readings such as 105 in Somajiguda and 335 in New Malakpet. The US Consulate recorded a hazardous level of 475 AQI.

The increase in pollution following Diwali has also exacerbated noise pollution across the city. Environmentalists and health experts alike are raising concerns over the long-term effects of this toxic air on residents, particularly children, as exposure to pollution can hinder lung development and lead to chronic health issues.
