WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2026: With just two months remaining before the U.S. midterm elections, Republicans are facing growing political headwinds as Democrats gain momentum in the race for control of Congress. President Donald Trump’s declining approval ratings, voter concerns over the economy and stronger Democratic enthusiasm have complicated the Republican campaign to retain its narrow congressional majorities.
Economic concerns, particularly the rising cost of living and affordability, have emerged as the dominant issues for voters. A Pew Research Center survey found that 43% of registered voters preferred a Democratic candidate for Congress, compared with 37% who favored a Republican. Trump’s approval rating stood at 34%, while 64% disapproved of his performance.
Democrats are also showing greater enthusiasm for the November election. Recent polling and special-election results suggest the party could be in position to regain control of the House, while the Senate remains a much closer contest. Republicans, however, retain important structural advantages, including favorable redistricting in several states and substantial financial resources from Trump-aligned groups.
The election is shaping up as a referendum on the Trump presidency, with issues ranging from inflation and healthcare to immigration, foreign policy and the war in Iran likely to influence voters. With all 435 House seats and roughly one-third of the Senate seats up for election on Nov. 3, both parties are entering the final stretch of a closely watched campaign that could determine the direction of Trump’s presidency for its remaining two years.
