WASHINGTON, September 20, 2026: The United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached an agreement aimed at strengthening security in the Arctic and North Atlantic, with the pact providing for an expanded US military presence in Greenland while affirming Danish sovereignty over the autonomous territory.
US President Donald Trump announced the agreement on Friday, saying it would give Washington permanent control over security and other security-related needs in Greenland. The US administration said the arrangement would prevent American adversaries from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments on the strategically located island.
The agreement, however, does not transfer Greenland to the United States. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the arrangement recognises the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark as well as the Greenlandic people's right to self-determination. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also welcomed the agreement.
US military presence to expand
Under the emerging arrangement, Washington is expected to expand its military footprint on Greenland. The United States already operates the Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland under existing defence arrangements.
The new agreement is intended to prevent non-NATO adversaries, particularly Russia and China, from establishing military bases or gaining a strategic foothold on the island. US officials have also indicated that sensitive investments by American adversaries would face restrictions.
The exact scope and operational details of the agreement have not yet been made public.
Agreement expected to be signed at UN General Assembly
The governments of Denmark and Greenland said the agreement is expected to be formally signed during the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week. It will then be subject to the necessary parliamentary procedures before entering into force.
The announcement follows months of diplomatic tensions after Trump repeatedly argued that US control of Greenland was necessary for national security and had previously raised the possibility of acquiring the territory.
The emerging agreement stops short of transferring sovereignty but gives Washington an expanded security role while maintaining Greenland's status within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Strategic importance of Greenland
Greenland's location between North America, Europe and the Arctic makes it strategically important for missile warning, space operations, maritime security and monitoring developments in the rapidly changing Arctic region.
The new arrangement is also being viewed in the context of broader NATO security in the Arctic and North Atlantic. Danish officials said the agreement would strengthen common security while respecting Greenland's autonomy and Denmark's territorial integrity.
