AMARAVATI, Andhra Pradesh, September 22, 2026 (Journalist File) — SRM University, Andhra Pradesh, hosted a Distinguished Lecture on Tuesday featuring Professor Ananthanarayanan Raman, a senior scientist with Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), as the university continued its efforts to strengthen research engagement and academic exchange.
Professor Raman, a senior scientist in Health and Biosecurity at CSIRO in Perth, delivered the lecture titled “From Curiosity to Discovery — The Power of Scientific Inquiry.”
Addressing students and researchers, Professor Raman explored how curiosity can evolve into knowledge and discovery through a disciplined process of scientific investigation.
Questioning assumptions at the heart of science
Professor Raman said systematic observation, questioning, logical reasoning, evidence-based analysis and continuous learning form the foundations of scientific inquiry.
He emphasised that curiosity can drive scientific progress, but discoveries need to be supported by logical reasoning and intellectual objectivity.
Researchers, he said, should be prepared to question existing assumptions, assess evidence and remain receptive to new information.
Scientific inquiry does not end with an answer, Professor Raman said. Instead, answers frequently generate new questions, while discoveries create opportunities for further investigation.
UDL series promotes research interaction
Welcoming Professor Raman, SRM AP Dean of Research Professor Ranjit Thapa said the University Distinguished Lecture series was designed to expose students and researchers to the experiences and research journeys of prominent scientists and academics.
He said the initiative seeks to go beyond conventional knowledge sharing by helping students understand the challenges, career decisions and experiences that shape successful academic and research careers.
SRM University Vice Chancellor Professor C.H. Satish Kumar said opportunities for students to interact directly with leading scientists were valuable in developing a deeper understanding of research.
He said Professor Raman's lecture highlighted the importance of retaining curiosity as the foundation of research, particularly at a time when researchers can sometimes place greater emphasis on publication outcomes.
The vice chancellor also acknowledged Professor Raman's contribution as a scientist, academic and mentor.
The programme was attended by Registrar Dr. Vinayak Kalluri, UDL Convener Dr. J.P. Raja Pandian, Professor Srinath Subramanyam, Easwari School of Liberal Arts Dean Professor Vishnupad, faculty members, researchers and students.
