The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, has emerged as a major focus of international attention amid concerns over the movement of commercial shipping and global energy supplies.
Mr. Trump reportedly raised the proposal in remarks concerning the strategic waterway, though it remains unclear whether any formal process to change its name has been initiated. The strait has historically been known as the Strait of Hormuz, named after the Iranian island of Hormuz.
