AMARAVATI, SEPTEMBER 21, 2026 (JOURNALIST FILE): The Andhra Pradesh government has revised the stipend structure for junior doctors and postgraduate and super-speciality medical students in government medical colleges and hospitals, with the revised rates taking effect from January 1, 2026.
The orders were issued by Medical and Health Department Principal Secretary Veerapandian. The government has approved a 10 per cent increase for MBBS and BDS house surgeons, 5 per cent for postgraduate medical students and 3.5 per cent for super-speciality students.
Under the new rates, the monthly stipend for house surgeons has increased from Rs. 25,906 to Rs. 28,497.
Revised PG stipends
The stipend for postgraduate medical students has been revised according to their year of study. First-year students will now receive Rs. 63,864, compared with the earlier Rs. 60,823. The stipend for second-year students has increased from Rs. 61,528 to Rs. 64,604, while third-year students will receive Rs. 68,005, up from Rs. 64,767.
The revised rates will also cover students pursuing PG Diploma, MDS and DNB courses.
Super-speciality stipend revised
The government has also approved higher stipends for super-speciality medical students.
First-year students will receive Rs. 84,525 a month, compared with Rs. 80,500 earlier. The second-year stipend has been increased from Rs. 82,800 to Rs. 86,940, while third-year students will receive Rs. 89,355, up from Rs. 85,100.
Annual 3.5 per cent increase
In another significant decision, the government has decided that stipends will be increased by 3.5 per cent every year. The Director of Medical Education has been directed to take necessary steps to implement the next annual revision from January 1, 2027.
The government estimates that the revised stipend structure will result in an additional annual expenditure of approximately Rs. 34.08 crore.
The decision covers junior doctors and medical students working and pursuing postgraduate and super-speciality programmes in government medical institutions across Andhra Pradesh.
The revision is expected to provide a uniform framework for stipend increases while establishing an annual mechanism for future revisions.
